Join us as we coast along the Atlantic for a father-daughter bike ride. We will be starting at mile zero in Key West, Florida. We plan to take on the Atlantic Coast one day at a time. We hope that this will be the perfect trip for getting in shape, learning new things, and experiencing America. We're pumped to get started and see where our bikes take us.

Day 18

Day #18: Hilton Head Island, SC- Mount Pleasant, SC (19 miles by bike, 101 in a car)

This morning we followed a bike path in Hilton Head all the way to the end to the most southern point on the island, and all the way back.

We passed some swamps but didn’t find any more alligators in them today.  We did find a statue of one though.

At the end of our ride we went to a really good bagel store, and then went back to our hotel to pack up. My dad picked a car up from Enterprise, and we started driving towards Charleston.  When we decided to experience Hilton Head we knew that we couldn’t bike there, so we also knew that we would have to drive to our next leg.  Hilton Head was really great and a biker’s paradise.  Once you are on the island, there is almost no road that doesn’t have a bike path.  Most are quite flat and shaded by beautiful trees.

On the drive to Charleston, we passed a sign for a Krispy Kreme store, and this time we were not going to miss it.  It was all we could’ve hoped for; you could see them making the donuts in the back of the store.  There we so many varieties of donuts and pastries we could have easily eaten a dozen, but we shared only three.

After that treat, we continued to Charleston, where we explored the downtown a little bit.

Once the clouds got very threatening we got back in the car to go over the bridge to Mount Pleasant.

While driving on the main road in Mount Pleasant, we passed a Whole Foods.  Compared to the stuff we’ve been seeing, that seemed pretty upscale.  But it got better.  About a minute later, we saw a Trader Joes.  We had to stop.  They had the kosher spicy mozzarella cheese which I live on at home, and we found some other good stuff for dinner too.

It was good to go into a supermarket that I had heard of before (as opposed to Publix or Bi Lo) and to get some food that tastes like home.

Tomorrow were going to return the rental car, and then head towards Andrews, South Carolina, aka the middle of nowhere.  We are “hoping” to stay at the Colonial Inn Motel – the only place to stay for 50 miles in each direction.  There are no real reviews of the motel, so we are bringing soap with us from the Comfort Inn we are staying at tonight – just in case.

Thanks for coming along for the ride!

P.S.- Shoutout to my Friday Night Lights crew- our hotel last night was on Dillon Road. Even though we're in South Carolina, Texas Forever! (miss you guys!)
